Her mother, Mary Wolf (1915–2001), was a commercial artist and former art editor, and her father, Harry William Streep, Jr. (1910–2003), was a pharmaceutical executive.

She has Irish and British descendance.

She started to get involved in the theatrical and aristic world since she was little in her house and in the institute by acting in small projects and school plays.

Streep was living with Jhon Cazale for three years until his death. Then she got married with Don Gummer in 1978. She has 4 children. 3 of this children are involved in artistic carreers, such as her child which is a musician and two of her daughters which are actresses.

When asked if religion plays a part in her life, 2009, Streep replied, "I follow no doctrine. I don't belong to a church or a temple or a synagogue. She also said "I've always been really, deeply interested in faith, because I think I can understand the solace that's available in the whole construct of religion." Streep does not rule out the possibility that God exists; “I do have a sense of trying to make things better. Where does that come from?”.
